Mrs. Vanessa E. Clayton
General Chairman, Life Members Council,Women’s Home & Overseas Missionary Society
Vanessa was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. At her home church, Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, she actively participated in children/youth ministries; taught Sunday School, eventually becoming Superintendent. Mrs. Clayton is a Deaconess and has served as a Class Leader, choir member, Christian Education Board Member, teacher of the New Members Class and Director of Vacation Bible School.
Vanessa is a graduate of Central Connecticut State College receiving a BS degree in Elementary Education. She has done graduate work at the University of Bridgeport, in Bridgeport, CT. She has worked as a teacher in the New Haven public school system for the past twenty-three (23) years.
She has served at the local level in every department of the Missionary Society and is a founding member of one of the first YAMS Department in the denomination, before it became an official department in the Society. On the District level, she served as President of the Ministers Spouses & Widows(ers) Fellowship.
Upon serving nineteen (19) years) as the Hartford District Chairman of Life Members; Mrs. Clayton was elected the 12th General Chairman of the Life Members Council on July 30, 2015, at the 28th WHOMS Quadrennial Convention.
Mrs. Clayton served in her community for many years as an officer in the local NAACP and President of the Waterbury Black Democratic Club. She is a member of the National Council of Negro Women and the Connecticut Education Association.
She and her husband, Rev. Elvin Clayton, are the proud parents of five children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
